Prehistoric Roots
Situated across both Cass and Crow Wing County, Gull Lake is a physical lake that’s also referred to as a greater region in Minnesota. In fact, today’s Gull Lake Dam sits near and above several burial mounds that are believed to stem from the Woodland American Indian tribes that called these lands home. It’s estimated that this tribe inhabited the area between 800 B.C. all the way through 900 A.D. Today, these burial mounds have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Building Up Gull Lake

The lush terrain lent itself to successful logging enterprises that also worked to create temporary lake dams. Eventually, it was recognized that a physical dam construction would be beneficial.
